Steven Meisel (born 1954) is one of the biggest names in fashion photography history. Along with his ability to cast the faces and characters that come to represent the look of fashion, Meisel has had a prodigious talent for scripting story lines that reference and reflect culture. For well over two decades, he has created every cover and lead editorial story for each issue of Italian Vogue. There may be no other photographer-magazine relationship in any other field of such long-lasting commitment and innovation.
This relation is celebrated by the publishing of the book Three Hundred Seventeen & Counting (Covers for Vogue Italia, 1988 - 2009 …). As the title predicts there are 317 covers which give a great overview of the history of fashion as well as Steven Meisel’s own particular view. It’s a limited edition and can be purchased here.
